The Hon. Kevin Bell AO KC
The Hon Kevin Bell AO KC is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria who has written several nationally significant judgments on the human rights of persons living with mental illness. He is a former professor of international human rights law and director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at Monash University, where he is now an adjunct professor. Kevin served on the Yoorrook Justice Commission, a First Peoples truth-telling process that helped lay the foundation for treaty-making in Victoria. His recent book, Housing: The Great Australian Right (Monash Publishing, 2024), draws attention to the importance of realising the human right to housing for (among others) people living with mental illness. Kevin has lived experience in the present as a carer of an adult son and, in the past, of the early death of a young adult daughter.
