Workshops
All workshops are NOT live streamed
1. EW actions in health promotion & preventative health workshop (session is not live streamed)
Title: Protecting health & reducing hospitalisation with equitable access to vaccines
People living with mental health conditions have 3 times the death rate, 5 times the hospitalisation rate and 7 times the hospital bed days due to vaccine preventable conditions. More people with mental illness die each year of influenza than suicide, and while suicide rates have stubbornly stayed stable for the last 30 years, vaccination is proven, effective way to protect health. Australia has a baffling array of vaccine providers and vaccine eligibility criteria (which can vary from state to state!).
This workshop will outline the range of vaccines available, eligibility and the range of providers. Workshop participants will explore the barriers to accessing vaccination and strategies to increase vaccine uptake.
The workshop will also present the learnings from implementation of a system (state) wide program to increase the vaccine uptake in people accessing public mental health services. The lessons learnt from this two-year program provide valuable insights and lesson for the implementation quality improvement programs generally.

Presenter(s):
Melissa Fidock, SA Health
Nerida Grosser, SA Health
Cherie Power, NSW Health

2. EW actions in primary care workshop (session is not live streamed)
Title: Holistic Practice: making the best of what we’ve got in primary care.
This workshop will unpack both the challenges and opportunities for addressing EW actions in the primary care setting and between primary and secondary/tertiary care.
We will use this workshop to focus on the WHOLE person’s health care needs, using what already exists in the primary health care system, warts and all!
If you work in primary care or attend primary care settings for your health care, this workshop is for you.
If you work in other mental health services (secondary, tertiary, community, or hospital) this workshop is also for you, if you want to help improve the integration between primary care and where you work.
In other words, EVERYONE is welcome.
Facilitated by:
Caroline Johnson, RACGP
Presenter(s):
Amanda Wheeler, Griffith University
Simone McCallum, Eastern Health
3. EW actions in secondary, hospital, & continuing care workshop (session is not live streamed)
Title: Cancer: Optimising prevention, screening & care
Australia is the world leader in cancer treatment, yet 45% percent of all premature deaths of people living with mental health conditions are due to cancer. (For the rest of the population this figure is 25%). This is despite the fact that the incidence of cancer is the same or lower in people living with mental health conditions, and we have free screening programs, and survival rates of over 90% for the most common cancers. This interactive workshop will work through initiatives we can action to reduce this inequity, including collectively mapping optimal cancer prevention, screening and treatment pathways for people living with mental health conditions.
Facilitated by:
Fiona Crawford-Williams, McGrath Foundation
Kate Whittaker, Cancer Council
Presenter(s):
Russell Roberts, Equally Well
4. EW actions in shared care workshop (session is not live streamed)
Title: Collaborative Health Care: Engaging GPs with Mental Health Services
The GP Shared Care Presentation will showcase to participants a PHN project that has sought to improve connections and collaboration between state mental health providers and GPs in the care of people living with complex and enduring mental health problems. This will include a focus on the recent GP Shared Care redesign in the CESPHN region, which emphasised physical health, consistency and streamlining of approaches, and methods to incentivise and support GP involvement in the physical health care of people living with a mental illness.
This session will also partner with an experienced General Practitioner who is currently aiming to establish Shared Care approaches in the region where she works & the presentation will draw on her experiences and recommendations, as well as offer some experimental opportunities for group members, including interactive client case studies.
Facilitated by:
